Mission: To provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. The JCI Global Community JCI is a worldwide community of young active citizens ages 18-40 who share the belief that in order to create positive change, we must take collective action to improve ourselves and the world around us. Engaging in activities ranging from sustainable development to international projects, we take responsibility for our communities while improving ourselves through participation, leadership and action. Active Citizens As global citizens, we all have rights and responsibilities. We have shared local, national and global interests. Active citizenship is the capacity we all have to work together towards our common goals. This spirit links JCI members: the sense of social responsibility and the initiative to take action to benefit society. Be Better JCI members constantly seek ways to live JCI’s slogan,Be Better. JCI members think critically about existing problems to find sustainable solutions for a better future. We not only believe that improvement is possible in our communities and in ourselves, we believe it is our responsibility. JCI Around the World With about 5,000 Local Organizations, JCI’s international network connects nearly 200,000 active citizens in more than 100 countries. Members belong to a JCI Local Organization where they implement local projects. Local Organizations are affiliated to National Organizations that coordinate activities on national and international scales. This structure forms a worldwide grassroots movement creating global impact through local action. International Events Each year, members from around the globe come together at JCI International Events. We host the JCI World Congress as well as regional conferences in Africa and the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, the Americas and Europe. At these events, JCI’s critical mass of young people unite to share experiences, learn through training and form intercultural connections. These international forums enable us to find new ways to take action in our local communities and show our commitment to socially responsible leadership. The Original Active Citizens JCI’s founder, Henry Giessenbier, Jr., decided to take responsibility for the progress of his community when he established JCI’s first Local Organization in St. Louis, USA in 1915. When delegates from eight countries met in Mexico City in 1944, they agreed it was time to officially form Junior Chamber International (JCI). This tradition of uniting active citizens from diverse backgrounds fueled the JCI movement and set the groundwork for creating positive change that transcends boundaries. Leadership and Democratic Values Each JCI Local and National Organization practices a one-year-to-lead self-governing system. Members hold elections for all leadership positions every year, giving many young people the chance to learn to lead. This system not only trains principle-centered leaders, it calls for democratic participation. Each member holds equal accountability for the organization, affirming his or her sense of responsibility and encouraging involvement. Joining Forces for Positive Change As an international nongovernmental organization with active participation in the United Nations system, JCI runs initiatives in collaboration with many organizations, including: • Advancing the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with the United Nations • Promoting Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the UN Global Compact • JCI Nothing But Nets with the UN Foundation • Local economic initiatives with the International Chamber of Commerce-World Chambers Federation (ICC-WCF) Empowering Young Citizens JCI enables positive change through the development of young citizens. JCI Programs offer opportunities to learn, inspire and build our experience as leaders, including: • JCI Training: Specialized courses provide individual development and enable members to lead their Local Organizations efficiently. • The JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (JCI TOYP): JCI honors 10 young people under 40 who exemplify JCI’s Mission, Vision and Values. • The JCI World Public Speaking Championship: Members learn communication skills that enable them to lead and inspire others. |
